Highland Community College Internship

Hi there,
Well, I just finished my internship as of this past Wednesday. It was probably one of the most interesting, uncomfortable learning experiences of my life. Day one of my internsip I was thrown right into audtioning numerous kids for a vocal jazz group and a chamber choir, then having to post the results which is harder than I ever imagined. I now realize why vocal instructors take a lot of time with this process, there are so many factors involved. I got this internship because this is the college where I got my associates, so I was in this vocal jazz group 5 years ago. Walking into that same rehearsal room on the OTHER side of the piano was the scariest thing I've ever done. I don't know why, I mean these kids are younger than me I know that I know more than them, but how do I TEACH them what I know...So as we got into the semester I taught sectionals, voice lessons, and taught a couple pieces by myself. I got very close with my students and wasn't just someone they came to for note problems, but someone they trusted to talk about anything they needed. We got to their main stage show, which is a pretty big deal so it was nice to be able to use my acting experience to help them with stage placement and being "perfomers." I've never had a feeling of pride like I did watching these kids from backstage perform the songs we worked on for so many months. Throughout the semester i also had the opportunity to work on a couple musicals with the theatre department. I really enjoyed this process. I felt like I brought a lot of the knowledge I obtained at ISU to these shows, whether it be how to do a stage slap or blocking a scene. Overall, this semester I learned more than I ever thought possible. I thought I would just be teaching but I ended up really learning a lot from these kids. I will never forget this experience of any of these kids.

Ashli - what a wonderful, honest post - I love how you talk about being on the "other side" - I think that alone will provide you such an invaluable lesson! I think it might actually help you the next time you go to an audition! And then as you talk about teaching and mentoring your students throughout the semester - what a great entry. Thank you so much for this.
