Intern at the Castle Theatre

My name is Sarah Lange, and I am a Music Business and Arts Technology double major with a French minor at ISU. For the first half of the Spring 2020 semester I had an internship at the Castle Theatre. At this internship, Jay Lowers was my mentor and I was able to work with several other interns from Bradley University. The rest of the staff at the Castle was also comprised of college students or newly graduated students. During my time at the Castle, I worked during the day and during the shows. Both were extremely useful for learning first-hand how performance venues were run and more details about the working of the music industry.                                         When I worked at the Castle during the daytime, Jay would always take time to teach about certain concepts of the music indus...

Internship with NewMusicShelf.com

Hello! My name is Noah White and I am a senior music business major at ISU with a minor in Business Administration. After hearing that an internship is a graduation requirement for the music business major, I will say I was a little nervous that it would be hard to find one in that upcoming semester. However, I was wrong because the opportunities that presented themselves in MUS 175 helped set me up with my internship.  This spring I completed my internship with ISU Alum Dennis Tobensk and NewMusicShelf.com . As I mentioned above, I heard about this opportunity in my MUS 175 class. After reaching out to Dennis to express interest, he sent me some more information on what the internship actually is and what he hopes that I would accomplish with it. The internship was mainly student-based, which I enjoyed because I knew that I would get out of it what I put into it. After chatting with Dennis, he offered me the opportunity for the internship and I immediately got started. The first j...

Internship with Pep Band

My name is Isaac Soares and I recently completed an internship as the Assistant to the Assistant Director of Bands: Marykate Kuhne. This year, Marykate was in charge of running the Pep Band for ISU athletic games. I have previously been the main drummer for pep band the last seven semesters, so I decided to try and take on a bigger role in the band. After consulting with my advisor, Dr. Stiers and Marykate, we were able to come up with an internship position for myself within the organization. In this position, all of my same obligations for the last seven semesters still applied except now I was in charge of leading drummer rehearsals, and assisting Marykate with in-game procedures and occasionally getting on the headset for her during games. I learned a lot through this internship including how to work with people that were new to playing in an athletic band of this size and composure. A lot of the new drummers had just come from small town high schools who had bands of less than twe...

2020 Internship

Hi guys, the name is Mel and I'm an indie artist/current student at ISU. Although my major is in Music Business, my internship may be considered.......unconventional. My other passion outside of music is puppetry and I've been puppeteering/puppet building since I was in middle school. My puppet shows have allowed me to perform shows across the U.S. and building for others has provided an occasionally decent income. Last summer a friend of mine put me in contact with a puppetry company that's currently filming a new show for PBS Kids called 'Donkey Hodie'. I was given the opportunity to go and audition and they were impressed enough by my self taught skills to offer me a job as an assistant puppeteer on the show.  Here's where the music comes in. As an indie artist I've released an album, an EP, and a slew of singles over the last few years. Before my interview for the show, I guess the producers did some digging on me and found my music. They told...
