Internship with Pep Band

My name is Isaac Soares and I recently completed an internship as the Assistant to the Assistant Director of Bands: Marykate Kuhne. This year, Marykate was in charge of running the Pep Band for ISU athletic games. I have previously been the main drummer for pep band the last seven semesters, so I decided to try and take on a bigger role in the band. After consulting with my advisor, Dr. Stiers and Marykate, we were able to come up with an internship position for myself within the organization. In this position, all of my same obligations for the last seven semesters still applied except now I was in charge of leading drummer rehearsals, and assisting Marykate with in-game procedures and occasionally getting on the headset for her during games. I learned a lot through this internship including how to work with people that were new to playing in an athletic band of this size and composure. A lot of the new drummers had just come from small town high schools who had bands of less than twenty people, while ISU's Pep Band pushed one hundred and fifty plus people. I also learned a lot about the stress a director of bands get put under during tournaments and travel. Marykate let me help her while we were travelling to St. Louis for the men's basketball tournament and I learned all about her responsibilities to keep us together and moving. Overall, this Internship gave me great managerial and teaching responsibilities and I'm extremely thankful I was able to finish out my last semester in such a positive way.
