Intern at the Castle Theatre

My name is Sarah Lange, and I am a Music Business and Arts Technology double major with a French minor at ISU. For the first half of the Spring 2020 semester I had an internship at the Castle Theatre. At this internship, Jay Lowers was my mentor and I was able to work with several other interns from Bradley University. The rest of the staff at the Castle was also comprised of college students or newly graduated students. During my time at the Castle, I worked during the day and during the shows. Both were extremely useful for learning first-hand how performance venues were run and more details about the working of the music industry.

When I worked at the Castle during the daytime, Jay would always take time to teach about certain concepts of the music industry. During my half of the internship we covered venue types, contracts, deal structures, and riders among other things. Additionally during daytime work, I would help Jay with work that needed to be done to prepare for the shows. This included helping the bands load in (if they had an early load in time), setting up the stage, doing laundry, setting up the dressing rooms and shopping riders. Riders, which are included in the band's contract with the venue, are lists which include everything the band needs to perform the show properly. These riders almost always include food and grocery items which I would shop for and bring them back to the dressing rooms.

The shows at the Castle were, of course, my favorite part of the internship. I signed up to work a variety of different genres including rock, EDM and solo instrumental acts. I enjoyed working the rock concerts the most. During the concerts I also worked a variety of jobs, depending on the needs of the staff that night. I worked the merchandise booth, beer bar, box office and security during these shows and met a lot of different people, including several full-time and part-time staff members. The musicians whom I met during these shows were always very polite to me and very good to talk to. Even though I only spent a short time with Castle Theatre, I feel as though I learned a lot and will use this experience in my future jobs.
