Civic Arts Intern for Uptown Normal
Hi all! My name is Shelby Goodman and I am in the process of completing my Music Business Practicum with the Civic Arts Department of Uptown Normal. Working alongside my supervisor, Adam Fox and fellow intern Matt Trujillo, I have helped create, plan, and implement two very exciting local summer events.
Throughout the course of the semester, I have worked on both LoungeAbout the RoundAbout Series and Make Music Normal. LoungeAbout the RoundAbout is a artist feature series that takes place in the Uptown Circle every Wednesday and Saturday beginning in May and ending September 1st. Each artist or band booked performs for two hours and is compensated by the Town for there services. I was in charge of the booking, negotiation, and contract writing for each of these artists. I tried to represent our local music scene to the fullest by including a wide variety of genres and types of artists.
The second event that I have been working on is a major summer festival called Make Music Normal. It is an all day event celebrating music of every kind that takes place annually. This year, MMN is expanding, now featuring 8 all-day stages with over 70 artists. Working alongside a local booking agency, Gabriel Events, I helped book and map out each stage in a cohesive way. We approached booking from many angles, including directly reaching out to new artists, having artists submit applications, and asking back artists from previous years. Through these methods, we were able to create an AMAZING lineup for this years festival.
Another component of MMN is the interactive partners that are featured from 12-4. These are groups whose primary goal is to engage with the audience and teach them something about music. Our partners include anything from dance teams teaching simple choreography to ISU String Project teaching people how to play simple notes on the violin. One contribution that I am especially proud of is establishing ISU Deaf and Blind Education as a partner. We are working to set up an activity where guests wear either vision-impairment goggles or a blindfold and work to read braille sheet music as well as a station dedicated to teaching guests how to sign simple songs. I am especially excited about this interactive partnership because it has never been incorporated before, and will accommodate/ bring awareness to entirely new group of people and how they experience music. :)
This internship has been very special to me as it has been all about bringing joy and people together through music. I think the music industry is often thought of in terms of national touring acts and labels, but this internship has shown me that you can still make a difference on a smaller scale and have it be just as rewarding.
