Internship with Cumulus Media
Hi! My name is Peter Beiswenger and I am a senior music business student at ISU. This summer I had the pleasure of interning at Cumulus Media in Chicago, IL. Upon learning that an internship was required for me to graduate, I was immediately worried. I knew COVID forced a lot of companies to get rid of their internship programs and I knew internships in the music industry were hard to come by even before COVID. After numerous google searches and scouring through LinkedIn there was nothing that really fit the description for the kind of internship I desired. I started talking to my friends and one of them told me their dad works for a company called Cumulus Media. After researching Cumulus Media for a little while, I was sold. I had never thought of looking into the radio and broadcasting industry but I grew up listening to Q101 and 94.7 so this internship seemed perfect. On their website it didn't list any internships but after speaking with a few people at the company I found out they were moving away from their internship program and changing the title to 'Promotions Assistant'.
As a promotions assistant I was in charge of helping run promotions events at various bars, restaurants, and festivals as well as ship station merchandise to fans and award station listeners who won giveaways their prizes. One of my first events was the PIQNIQ music festival at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Tinley Park, IL. For PIQNIQ the other promotions assistants and I had to go to the venue the day before and set up everything we needed for the festival. This included tents, banners, games, supplies etc. On the actual day of the event we were in charge of interacting with the festival goers through games and giveaways as well as organizing and executing preplanned meet and greet activities with the fans and artists. At the end of the event we had to pack everything back up and bring it back to the station. This was just one of many events I worked this summer.
What I loved about this internship is each event was very unique. I felt like I was thrown into a different environment for every event and I had to learn what was the best way to interact with people at each location. I also loved how close I was to the music industry. I got to meet a lot of cool music artists and their managers/team. Before applying I thought this was going to be a "normal" 9-5 desk job but what I got was far from it. The experience and knowledge I attained from this internship was exactly what I was looking for.
